Printed Circuit Boards today must be designed with skill, care and attention to detail. The majority of PCB designs today must be created following high signal frequency rules. More is involved than the clock frequency. The fast signal rise and fall time is often what defines the frequencies on the board. For example: the clock may be at 60 Mhz but if the data has a rise time of 100ps and a like fall time for a 200ps period, the real fundamental frequency is 5 Ghz!

Another critical item in the PCB Layout is the return current path. The return current must follow an uninterrupted path under the signal trace. A broken path, such as crossing split ground plane boundaries, may lead to nasty results such as cross talk and loss of controlled impedance.
